Book design and layout

Book layout:

The editor is not always able to determine exactly what the book will look like. The editor’s job is to think about the overall look of the publication and determine all the necessary elements. After that, the book is handed over to the typesetter. The typesetter receives text files and folders with photos, he looks through the materials received and imagines the result of his work in advance. More often than not, he will design the layout himself, and in doing so he must take into account all of the customer’s wishes. Of course, he will apply his knowledge and experience and be guided by the general rules of book layout.

The typesetter not only works with the text but also (as a layout designer) places illustrations on the pages. In doing so he is obliged to follow several rules. First of all, he must remember that the illustrations must facilitate the perception of the book as a whole. The planner must have a certain artistic taste and avoid stylistic discord. Of course, he must also remember that the logical completion of the book is not possible without following all the layout rules. If in order to simplify the process of layout one has to «adjust the layout to the convenience» of the layout designer, then in the finished book such deviations from the rules are not allowed.

Actually typesetting is placement of materials (text and images) on pages of a certain format. All the layout requirements may be divided into compositional, hygienic and stylistic.

Compositional requirements are associated with the concept of technical and informational compatibility and consistency of formatting of pages, their register (sequential placement of text on the pages without an overlap) and the correct order of text elements. Headings, formulas, tables, i.e. all elements that differ from the main text, are height-adjusted to a multiple of the main text’s font size. This rule does not apply only to newspaper publications.

Hygiene requirements are intended to protect the health of the consumer. In the case of printing books, they primarily protect eyesight during reading: use of easy-to-read fonts, observance of correct spacing between text parts and necessary margin width.

The stylistic requirements are aimed at maintaining a uniform and harmonious image of the publication: this is the uniformity of the text structure. In addition, a beautiful layout always follows the rules of the Golden Ratio.

Layout and the golden ratio:

When designing a publication and executing the layout, it is useful to remember the Golden Ratio rule. It helps to choose the right proportions for a page.

What is the golden ratio rule? It is known that the eye when contemplating objects perceives better their ratio when a larger line segment refers to a smaller one, as the whole line to a larger segment. Mathematically it looks like (A + B) : A = A : B. And if the smaller line segment B is considered equal to 1, then A is approximately 1.61. For the human eye, such proportions are most likely convenient for the reason that the eye muscles experience the least tension. Besides, a human sees horizontally better than vertically. This is why an image that is compressed in width and stretched out in height is often more comfortable, both for letters and pages.

It has been established for a long time that not chaotic compositions but planes with clear geometric proportions are perceived better from an aesthetic point of view. However, there is no scientific justification for this yet.

Developed many options for the proportions between the width and height of the page. To orient oneself in preparing the layout for make-up, one may proceed either from irrational proportions, which are determined geometrically (the golden ratio is 1:1,618, the ratio of the side of a square to its diagonal is 1:1,41, 1:1,538, 1:1,732), or from simple rational proportions (1:2, 2:3, 3:4, and close to the golden ratio 5:8, 5:9).

Consideration should be given to the correct combination of all the elements in the design of the book. If everything is done correctly, the size of the strip set well with the width of the margins and the indents, the font does not contradict the format of the publication, the schedule looks organic. But in the case of carelessness the whole view of the book suffers. This should not be forgotten and in the layout of a complex and voluminous work, and when working on a small edition.

The layout should ensure the correct perception of the book, and before starting the layout, it is necessary to think through all the details. The layout cannot be considered satisfactory if the text has to be read with unnecessary effort. The main thing for the reader is to understand what the author wanted to say. The optimum solution in many cases is the classic one, and the layout designer’s creativity is not always appropriate.

What is an author’s sheet?

A worksheet is a unit of measurement for the length of text in your manuscript. Based on the amount of text in worksheets, the publisher will calculate the parameters of the book and its production cost.

A worksheet is 40000 characters, including spaces. If your text is in MS Word, you can calculate its volume by going to Tools and Word Count.

The volume can also be calculated approximately, knowing that an author’s page equals 24 printed pages in size 10 with 1.5 spacing.

Design works:

There are many factors to consider when working on a print product design — the type of product, the printing and the post-printing work required.

You can come to us either with ready-made design solutions or order design of printed products from us. Designers of our printing house will select fonts which will suit best for a specific printed matter, offer such colour solutions, variants of successful arrangement of illustrations, photos and text blocks, and prepare layouts for printing in accordance with all rules and requirements.
